The origins and legends of the Mid-Autumn Festival are varied and numerous; here are some of the main sources and explanations:

1、Ancient Moon Worship: In ancient China, people had the custom of worshipping the moon, associating it with harvests, reunion, and femininity. The Mid-Autumn Festival falls in the middle of autumn when the moon is at its roundest and brightest, making it the perfect time for moon worship and moon viewing.
2、The Legend of Chang’e Flying to the Moon: One of the most famous legends of the Mid-Autumn Festival is the story of Chang’e flying to the moon. According to the tale, in ancient times, there were ten suns scorching the earth. A hero named Hou Yi shot down nine of the suns to save the people. His wife, Chang’e, swallowed the elixir of immortality that was given to Hou Yi by the Queen Mother of the West, and as a result, she ascended to the moon, separating herself from Hou Yi forever.
3、Wu Gang Chopping the Osmanthus Tree: Another legend associated with the Mid-Autumn Festival is that of Wu Gang chopping the osmanthus tree. Wu Gang was said to have been banished to the moon for his wrongdoing and was tasked with chopping down a magical osmanthus tree on the moon. However, the tree regenerates instantly, leaving Wu Gang in an endless cycle of labor.
4、The Jade Rabbit Pounder: Accompanying Chang’e on the moon is a jade rabbit that pounds herbs for the elixir of life, becoming a symbolic figure of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
